Ubuntu 10.04 and its left aligned window control panel

It's true that a lot of people is complaining about the new theme of Ubuntu 10.04 which brings the windows' control panel aligned to the left.

If you are one of those people, and you badly want to change it, your problems are over! Just open the terminal and execute the comand: gconftool-2 --type string --set "/apps/metacity/general/button_layout" "menu:minimize,maximize,close"; YOU DON'T NEED TO BE ROOT TO RU THIS COMMAND.

Windows Mobile Apps & Web Services in Windows 7

Hello everyone!! it's been a long time!
Well, this week, I was studying Mobile Apps develompment for windows mobile 6 with C#.Net and I got some problems while trying to connect the device emulator to a Web Service (developed by me specially to this mobile app) that was running on my machine. No matter how I tried, I always got the error "Unable to connect to remote server" (Figure 1).

After a lot of reasearch in Google and lots of discussing with my teacher and with the fellows of dotNug, and with some friends, I discovered that I had to follow some steps to get the device emulator talking to my computer.

Environment:

- Windows 7 Professional Media Center Edition
- Visual Studio 2008 SP1
- Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1
- Windows Mobile 6 Professional App
- .NET 3.5 compact framework
- Windows Mobile 6 Professional Emulator

First of all: When adding a web reference to a WebService in your Smart Device project, you CANNOT use localhost at the URL; use the [name of your computer] instead, because to the emulator, localhost is the virtual device itself. Ex.: http://machine_name/webservice1

Step 2: Install Microsoft Virtual PC, so it will install a virtual network interface which is required.

Step 3: Install Windows Mobile Device Center. It will synchronize the virtual device with the computer.

Step 4:   Open Windows Mobile Device Center and allow DMA connections. This can be done by going to Mobile Device Settings ->Connection Settings -> Allow Connections to one of the following -> Select DMA

Step 5: Open Visual Studio opened in your mobile app
   - In the toolbar select Device Options Icon (located next to dropdown with the emulators to select from)
   - Under Device Tools -> Devices I select my Windows Mobile 6 Pro Emulator then click on Properties
   - Click Emulator Options
   - Select the Network Tab
   - Check the first box (enabled NE2000 PCMCIA network adapter and bind to:)
   - Select the name of your network card

Step 6: Run the emulator by running the application

- Go to Connection Settings in the Emulator
Start -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections -> Advanced Tab -> Select Networks -> Choose My Work Network for both drop downs

Step 7: Open the device emulator manager, go to the model of the device you are using, right click and click Craddle. This will connect the emulator to your machine.

I hope this short tutorial can help you guys solving this issue.

Nokia 5800 RM-428 Firmware Update V 31.2.101

I've got my nokia 5800 about a year ago. I confess I got kinda frustrated with the nokia firmware updates. No matter how I tried I couldn't get my firmware updated and I didn't want to change the product code of my phone.
Well, yesterday I installed the Nokia Ovi Suite, and with it, I could finally get my phone updated to the version 31.2.101.

I want to say to you guys that this is not a tutorial; this just an announcement that the RM-428 (US Black) may be easily updated via Nokia Ovi Suite, without the need of changing the product code.

... Android SDK and User's folder

Well, I started studying the Android SDK with Eclipse 3.5 Galileo and the ADT Plugin, running on Windows 7 Professional.

The objective of this post is not explaining how to install them nor configuring the environment; if you are looking for that information, you can take a look at the Android Developer page.

After installing the SDK, the ADT Plugin for Eclipse and setting the location of android sdk folder into the plugin's settings I still couldn't run the emulator. No matter how much I tried all I could get was the following error:

Reading the error message I took a look at the list of AVDs (Android Virtual Devices) and I could see that the device was there:

So, after taking a look at Google during a few days, I found the solution here; and I decided to show it to you guys who are having the same issue.

The cause:

I changed the location of my user folder from the default (C:\users\user) to another disk partition. The Eclipse, Java and the Emulator, they have different behaviors when looking for this folder, the changed location was causing a conflict which was avoiding the command line and Eclipse of finding the AVDs.

Solution:

Create a Environment variable called ANDROID_SDK_HOME and point it to your user folder, where the folder .android is located (Ex: F:\user).

Doing this, you will override the behaviors and fix the issue.

Bem... estava eu aqui no meu laptop, quando resolvi fazer os "assignments" da aula de Unix/Linux. Baixei o "Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 64bits" e tambem o Kubuntu 8.10 64bits, para rodá-lo na máquina virtual. Quando estava tentando instalar, o sistema retorna a seguinte mensagem: "This Kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel apropriate for your CPU.". Isso me deixou frustrado, pois minha CPU é 64.
"Bulindo" nas configurações do Virtual PC, vi que o mesmo lista o processador como um Pentium III. Isso não ocorre apenas no meu PC.
Procurei por soluções na Web e nem o Google pode me mostrar alguma. Daí pergunto: Alguém por ai que por acaso esteja lendo teve esse mesmo problema? Resolveu?

Taking a looking at the Virtual Machine settings, I saw that the Processor listed is a Pentium III. And this problem is not only on my PC. I tried to find a solution on the Web, but I couldn't. Even Google could say it to me.
So, I ask: Is it right? or dia I make something wrong? Did someone who is reading this (by chance or not) have that same problem? Were you able to solve it? How?

Eu sempre ficava imaginando (ou pelo menos tentando imaginar) porque os blogs fazem tanto sucesso. Lendo as postagens da minha grande amiga La Perfect, que diz que ter um blog é como ter o seu próprio jornal, tive essa curiosidade aumentada. Vocês precisam ver o entusiasmo que ela tem para escrever e a felicidade ao ver que alguém comentou em um de seus posts. Daí, resolvi criar este blog para ter um pouco dessa sensação. Acho que também será uma maneira de expressar tudo o que sinto por aqui e relatar os acontecimentos e experiências vividas na terra do Tio Sam.
Opa... esqueci de falar sobre isso. Bem, não sei quem sabe e quem não sabe, mas estou passando por uma experiência bem legal e única na vida. Um belo dia estava eu, no CEFET-PB (des)atento na aula, quando entra o professor Joabson e dar a notícia sobre uma bolsa para estudar nos EUA. Eu, claro, não podia perder a oportunidade, me inscrevi e após 2 provas, 1 entrevista e uns meses de agunstia e espectativas, fui selecionado junto com mais 5 amigos (Nielson, Breno, David, Neto e Magno) de João Pessoa.

Ah... só não esperem demais, pois ao contrário da La Perfect eu não tenho toda essa capacidade para escrever. Mas vou fazer o possível para ser um bom "jornalista".
